Well, That Explains That

Remember when the little runt in North Korea kicked it and I was amazed at all of the public mourning that was going on? Seriously, people appeared to be beside themselves with grief as they fell all over each other in the streets. There was so much hysterical sobbing. It seemed weird. And it was. And now we know why.

According to something called Daily NK, "The North Korean authorities have completed the criticism sessions which began after the mourning period for Kim Jong Il and begun to punish those who transgressed during the highly orchestrated mourning events." Uhhh...come again? "
The authorities are handing down at least six months in a labor-training camp to anybody who didn’t participate in the organized gatherings during the mourning period, or who did participate but didn’t cry and didn't seem genuine." Holy police state, Batman. I guess that would explain the scenes that we saw like this:

And this:

And this:

I think that I'd be sobbing my head off in public too if I knew that if I didn't that I was going to be picked up and sent to some sort of North Korean labor camp. Just the thought of that almost makes me burst out crying right now! Oh, but look! It gets worse! "...
the source added that people who are accused of circulating rumors criticizing the country’s 3rd generation dynastic system are also being sent to re-education camps or being banished with their families to remote rural areas." Not that this needs to be said or anything, but that seems rather extreme. So let me get this straight. If a member of my family circulates some sort of rumor about the newest runt to run that hell hole-ish regime, then my family gets banished along with the naysayer?! What about that particularly mouthy aunt that everyone seems to have? Just because she opens her yap then the rest of us end up rurally banished?! That seems...what's the word I want? Oh, that's right. Bat s*** crazy.

In this country people can say whatever they want about this country without fear of having themselves and/or their families banished. And while there might be an awful lot of things to complain about around here, the freedom to say whatever you want or whatever you don't want should never be complained about. And here, I thought that maybe things could be different in North Korea with a new leader. Yeah, that's not going to happen. Crap.

That's Unfortunate

Kim Jong IL, the little runt that ran North Korea died about a week ago. He had a penchant for ladies glasses and platform shoes, as well as running his country with an iron fist. Too bad he wasn't named Kim Jong Healthy. Maybe he would have been around a little longer. (I know. I know. It's a horrible joke. But it's not the last of them, so consider yourself warned.) But now he's dead and his son is taking over.

His son is named Kim Jong Un. While Kim Jong IL was referred to as "Dear Leader", the new guy will be referred to as the "Supreme Leader". Really? The Supreme Leader? So, is the guy after him going to be called the "Bell Grande Leader"? (Hey, it was between that and a Diana Ross joke! Just back off! I'm still under the weather!) And I was hoping that with a new jazzy name like Supreme Leader that there might be some other snazzy changes on the way. Sadly, I was wrong.

North Korea's Taco Supreme's National Defense Commission announced today that "On this occasion, we solemnly declare with confidence that foolish politicians around the world including the puppet forces in South Korea should not expect any changes from us." Grand. So I guess that it's 'Meet the new boss. Same as the old boss." for North Korea. Not that most of its citizens will know any different. The previous leaders had done a bang up job of isolating those poor folks from the rest of the world. No Internet. No travel. Not much of anything other than a lot of dark colored wool clothing from what I can tell. It's all very unfortunate. Though he did call politicians 'foolish', so I will give him credit for that. But that's it.

With any sort of humanitarian changes seemingly off the table for now, I guess all I will have to look forward to under this new regime are all of the accomplishments that Kim Jong Un will create for himself, much as his father did. As you may or may not care to remember, Kim Jong IL had a very impressive list of accomplishments that include, but are not limited to:
  • Being an "Internet expert". (Hard to know what that means for a guy who doesn't allow Internet in his country. Maybe that means he knows how to flip the ON/OFF switch without assistance or something. He could also be extremely astute with The Google. Many, many choices on that one.)
  • Claiming to have shot "multiple" holes-in-one (hole-in-ones?) on his first attempt at golf. Oh, and let's not forget his finishing 38-under par. Sure. That happened.
  • Says that he composed six operas. (Really? With all of his time spent dictating and oppressing, did he really have time for opera writing? And where are these operas? Oh, nowhere? OK, then.)
Yeah, this new guy, he's going to fly himself to Mars, isn't he? Or cure AIDS? Or be able to pass a football around the world? I'm expecting big things from Taco Supreme. Unfortunately, none of the things that he is going to be able to concoct in his own mind are going to do anything to help the people who are in North Korea.

Why Are They Crying?

So, Kim Jong Il died. And while it might seem as if everyone is better off without him, we really don't know anything about his son who is replacing him. He could be even crazier. (Yes, I realize it's hard to imagine someone crazier than a guy who claims that he made eleven holes-in-one during a single round of golf. But this is his son. Apple...tree...it wouldn't surprise me if this little runt is just as nuts as the newly deceased little runt.) All I'm saying is that we shouldn't get too excited just quite yet.

But speaking of crazy, can we just talk for a minute about the reaction of the North Koreans? These are people who live in what is essentially a hermit country. Their nation doesn't play well with the rest of the world. And these people live without much at all. There are food shortages and power outages all of the time. And they have so little freedom (as is usually the case with a police state). I guess I would have thought that they all would have been rejoicing at the death of this little guy. But it was actually quite the opposite. They were distraught. I mean up-set. They were crying and inconsolable. It's quite fascinating to watch. I guess when you don't know any different that you don't know what you're missing. I certainly hope that with the death of Kim Jong Il that the people will be able to learn what they're missing...for the better. The video of the people freaking out is below. If it doesn't work, click here.

Show Me The Money

Remember that story of the three American dumbasses hikers who thought that it would be a good idea to go for a little stroll right there along the border of Iran? And then the Iranians arrested them and accused them of being spies? And they've been in an Iranian prison ever since? You remember, right? Right. Well now, it looks like Iran might be willing to release them on "humanitarian" grounds, but there's kind of a catch. See, "humanitarian" to the Iranians means they want a million dollars and then they'll let them go.

And I really don't care one way or the other whether or not they let those numbnuts go. As much as I
dislike Iran, I really don't have any problem with any country enforcing the laws regarding their borders and keeping people out of their country. I know it's a foreign concept (pun not really intended) for the United States, but other countries really do seem to give a fat rat's ass about who legally comes and goes. Go figure. But I digress. Where was I? Oh, right. The numbnuts and their million dollars of humanity.

I keep reading all of these news reports about how their release is imminent as soon as the million dollars ($500,000 per dumbass) is paid. As you'll recall, their companion, a one Sarah Shourd, was released a while back after $500,000 was paid for her release. Now, thinking back on that incident and reading about current events, I'm noticing that there is one small item that no one seems to be mentioning. Where, pray tell, is all of this money coming from?

I don't know about you, but a lot of people don't have half a million dollars just lying around in case their children go off on very inadvisable travel plans along the borders of some crazy sand land countries. Where are all of these miraculous half a million dollar ransoms coming from? I mean, those two chicks who got themselves all locked up in North Korea because they were doing the same thing and hiking near the border of a country ruled by a lunatic, they just had Bill Clinton show up and that was that. (Who knew Slick Willie still had that kind of pull?) It didn't cost anything to get them out. But Iran wants money. And from what I can tell, they're going to get it. I just want to know where it comes from.

Please tell me that the United States doesn't have some sort of Stupid Ass Lost Hiker Fund or anything like that. And if we do, please tell me that it's funded by private donations of those sympathetic to stupid ass lost hikers. Don't tell me that it's taxpayer money or anything like that. Sorry that I'm not more sympathetic, but I don't have a lot of patience for things that are REALLY easy to avoid. Look at me! Here I am! NOT hiking anywhere NEAR Iran! See? Easy.

Kim Jong Probably Still IL

North Korea released some more photos of their 'Dear Leader' Kim Jong IL the other day. Sadly, they show that the North Koreans have still not gotten any better at Photoshop. They keep releasing these photos which have some pretty obvious flaws in them, yet the fact that despite that they still continue to release them makes me assume that they really believe that they're pretty darn tricky. My money is on the guy being dead. Already. And for a while.

Here we have the latest photos that aren't quite right (just like the folks who released them). This one shows Kim Jong IL standing in the middle of some very neatly arranged troops. You should be able to click on all of the photos and have them enlarge in their own, convenient window for larger and easier viewing.

The folks across the pond at the BBC put together a nice little diagram of some of the more obvious flaws in this photo. They point out the black line that runs behind everyone but the 'Dead Dear Leader'. They also show the mismatched pixels around his shoe and how the shadow of Kim Jong IL doesn't quite match up with the rest of the North Korean Shadow World there. (Now, is it just me, or are they all wearing Russian hats?)

And it's not like they haven't released a picture prior to this one that looks almost identical with the exception of the dried grass that they seem to be standing on and the multi-storied, residential looking building in the background . It too is missing the elusive black line. Behold!

It's when I started looking at the photo above that I noticed some other things that were really odd. (Odd in the sense that I found them strange. Stranger than having troops assembled for a class photo in front of what appears to be some sort of apartment complex behind them. As a citizen, I would find it a bit unnerving to look out my window and see the sight above. Just a bit. Then again, I'd also find it unnerving to look out my window and see North Korea, as when I look out my window now, North Korea is not there.)

As I looked in the area that I've circled below, it was obvious that the photo is not of the best quality. And for good reason. It kind of occurred to me that it didn't seem likely that those were actually people standing there all straight and neat. No, that appears to be a screaming Alfalfa from the Little Rascals. (And do you blame him? I'd scream too if I were Alfalfa and I suddenly found myself as a North Korean soldier on Picture Day.) There seem to be a lot of Alfalfas in that row. And below him and to the right a little bit, that soldier looks like a porcelain doll head!

And look, whether you think it's Alfalfa or not, you have to admit, those aren't human heads. Those do not look like regular people, pixelated all over the place or not. But look at their feet over there on the right hand side also (pic below). Those feet are walking the other way! Was it the Communist Photoshop Guy's first day? Dude, that's Secret Korean Empire Fake Picture Making 101!! Everyone knows to make all of the feet walk the right way. (If I look at it long enough, it starts to remind me of some of the Civil War pictures. The US Civil War!)

Seriously, why would you do that? Why would you have pictures that you're releasing for the purpose of trying to convince the world that your pompadoured, possibly crazy, probably dead, Communist leader is alive and well and not turn their feet around the right way? Do they not have 'Zoom' or 'Enlarge' in North Korea? Judging from Kim Jong IL's hair, they DO!

Has anyone been able to explain the L.L. Bean jacket or the Eddie Bauer coat or whatever that is that he's always wearing? It's like he's receiving fashion tips from I'm A Dinner Jacket over there in Iran with the Members Only windbreaker that he's always sporting.

I'm telling you, the guy is not well. If he had a stroke in August which was followed by brain surgery and now he's just up and out and about and inspecting troops all over the place, well then, North Korea is the new leader in stroke treatment and recovery. Not to mention the Noggin Surgery Capital of the World. IF, I said. IF all that has happened. I don't think it has, so wherever the current Noggin Surgery Capital of the World is, it's safe.

Just How ILL Is Kim Jong?

So, about a week ago, North Korea announced that they were going to make an announcement. They're funny like that. Speculation was that the announcement was going to have something to do with the health and/or possible/probable (the guy's probably been dead for weeks, alright?) death/demise of the bouffant haired, designer eyewear-sporting, dictator Kim Jong IL. (I like to use all caps when typing the guy's last name because otherwise it looks like Kim Jong Il and then some moron is going to call him Kim Jong the Second and I just can't have that.) Kim Jong IL, who seems to attempt to fashion his quaff after a one Elvis Presley (who was neither Korean, nor a dictator. Not that those things have anything to do with it, I'm just sayin'.), is not exactly the most normal fellow. And North Korea, as a result of his not normal-ness, isn't exactly the most normal country.

North Korea could be described as "rather secretive." They could also be described as "big, fat liars." For some reason, Kim Jung IL has apparently felt the need to apparently make stuff up on occasion and apparently expect everyone else in the world to believe it simply because he said so. Allow me to give you an example of some of the yarns spun by a one Kim Jong IL. If you're asking him, Kim Jong IL will tell you that he is a most accomplished golfer! He will claim to have scored eleven, yes eleven, eleven hole-in-ones on the VERY FIRST round of golf he EVER played. See, now I would have a problem believing that, but that's because I don't live in North Korea, I'm not North Korean and I don't plan on being North Korean. However, if I had been any of those things, I would either believe it or believe it. He's not much on options, that IL fellow.

Just a couple other illustrations of how Kim Jong IL might not be living in the here and now all the time. (Then I'll get on to the part about how Kim Jong IL might not be living. Period.) The man has:
  • He has kidnapped ordinary Japanese people off the streets in order to train his spies. (They needed to practice!)

  • He has kidnapped South Korean movie stars in order to enhance his efforts at directing films. (Can you picture that in the US? George W. Bush sends a squad of goons out to bring him Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie?)

  • He considers himself to be a huge film buff with a collection of at least 20,000 videotapes. (He apparently doesn't consider himself a high tech buff, as that would explain the continued usage of a VCR and not a DVD player.)

  • He once ordered the kidnapping of a South Korean actress and her director husband so that he could tell them how much he liked their work. (Has the man never heard of Hallmark? Must the kidnapping scheme be deployed just to tell someone 'Thanks!'?)

So as you can probably gather, the man is, well, less than well. Maybe FAR less than well. How much less? Take well. Subtract well. You're left with dead. Yes, that's right. I'm making the rare leap from the edge of my reality into the completely speculated and possibly fabricated realm of suspicion and conspiracy when I say that (and remember, you read it here first) I think that Kim Jong IL isn't ill. I think he's dead.

Somewhere around August, 2008, the fluffy haired dictator supposedly suffered a stroke that supposedly either killed him or left in completely incapacitated. The alleged stroke is also alleged to have required him to have alleged surgery on his alleged brain. So, since the time when all of these things may or may not have happened, he has supposedly made a remarkably speedy recovery (quicker than most folks who have had a stroke AND brain surgery within the past three months) and he is now supposedly fine and free to move about the country. And we're supposed to buy that story? That he's fine? I see. I wonder if they performed his brain surgery on the same golf course where he hit his eleven hole-in-ones? Or perhaps they cut his noggin right on open when he was watching a soccer game. You know, the one where the players that had long hair annoyed him, so he ordered all men in the country to have short hair. That's right. He enacted a long hair ban. Wait. What?

Correct. While the bouffanted one watched the match through his very feminine and sporty framed eye wear, he ordered that all men shall be clean-cut. That information was from the most readily available source of information out of North Korea, that of the "unnamed source close to the regime." That's another thing you'll notice about North Korea and all of their "I've Got A Secret" game playing. All of the "proof" that their "Dear Leader" (Yes, that's what he prefers to be called. Dear Leader. It's like he's the successor to Dear Abby or something. "Dear Leader, I live in a Communist regime under the iron fist of a man who has hair like Elvis and sunglasses like Elizabeth Taylor.") is not dead or incapacitated is in the form of still photos, never video. All of the reports of what "Dear Leader" has done have come from "unnamed sources close to the regime". Translation: They are the regime and he's dead as a doornail. (I don't really know what a doornail is, but it does sound dead. Or, at least, not alive.)

His unsubstantiated remark about the long haired heathens went something like, "I think it is untidy and not befitting for athletes to grow long hair." He is also alleged to have said, "What kind of haircuts are these? If things are like this, you cannot tell whether this is a men's football match or women's," said the Communist dictator from behind his tinted ladies sunglasses. The folks I've never heard of over at the AFP reported that Dear Leader became frustrated and "stopped watching the match after the first half." Of course, the unnamed ones in the regime couldn't bother to mention whether he was actually there at the game or whether he watched it somewhere else. (Now, you do see what we're dealing with here, right? Slightly crazy, possibly dead, definitely odd, Communist dictator. I just wanted that to be clear so the rest of this doesn't sound more nuts.) But then, lo and behold (brother and sister to flora and fauna), lo and behold, then came the pictures!

Look, I don't know one way or the other if the guy is alive or dead, incapacitated or capacitated. All I know is that these photos have been retouched and edited more than the models in a Victoria's Secret catalog. (Oh, right! Like people really look like those women! You know what else? When a group of women all get together for their 'Ladies Night' once a month, they don't strip down to their bras and panties and have pillow fights either! So there!) Seriously, look at these:

The photo above is supposed to be Kim Jong IL at the long haired soccer game. There's just something odd about it. But it's so subtle, I think it might be easy to miss. Like the proportional sizes of Kim Jong IL and the other folks. It's just not quite right. He's also very focused (you won't hear that about him any other time except when someone is referring to a photo, I'll tell you that much.) and the folks that aren't that far away from him are much more out of focus when compared with how focused he is (again, only in pictures).

He's supposed to be at a soccer match. And I realize that there are different ways of doing things in different countries, but where is the field supposed to be and why are there all of those trees outside? Is that a remote control on the shelf in front of him? What is he remoting? The players? It's not electronic foosball, Dear Leader! And why does he look like he's sitting in one of those overstuffed easy chairs made out of the back of a Cadillac?

Now, if you click on these pics, they're supposed to get bigger. And that's a good thing, because they're hard to see the way they are. In the one below where I have circled his fluffy hair, you can see where his hairline is just a little too straight and neat. Also, the discoloring on his face is just weird. Yeah, the guy is a fruitcake who kidnaps actresses to tell them "Nice job!" But it's just not normal, even for a fruit cake. But look at the other part I circled. It looks like it's supposed to be part of a chair or something, but where's the rest of it? Again, click it, make it bigger and then tell me what the heck that is.

And in this one, if you could identify the area circled in yellow, I'd appreciate it, because it's weird looking. It's supposed to be a bunch of trees, I guess. But when you look at it when it's larger, it's a weird reflection of something or something is covered up strangely, but it's not a tree. Or if it is a tree then I ask again, where are they playing soccer? I don't get it.

The one below seems to have more glaring problems than the one above. It would appear that he's giving directions, but I can't imagine where to. They're in North Korea. Where are they going to go? Like the one above, the proportions are wrong. The guys are lined up and they just look funny. I can't explain it better than that and that's unfortunate because it sounds lame. But look at them! They look like they were cut out of a magazine, all sharp edged and all.

But here's a more clear illustration of the proportions being off. In the section that I chopped out below, his finger appears to be right on top of his face. You can tell there isn't any depth in between the two. AND on top of that, the hand and finger look HUGE compared to the head.

Here is a little collage of all of the left hands in the picture. Where are all of their fingers? Why do they all have the same hand?

Then there are the heads. No, not like Mount Rushmore. The North Korean heads. The face below has obviously been edited onto that head. It looks like he's wearing a mask. That is not his face and it may or may not be his head. But that face definitely does not go with that head. Or anything else attached to it. Presumably.

And the same thing is true for the dude below. That face does not fit right on that head and/or neck. The hair looks like a helmet that was placed atop his Communist melon as to prevent future injury.

This guy could be the next North Korean Two-Face if Batman ever moved to Gotham City, Korea. Look at his eyes. It's half and half. Half one guy's face, half another guy's face, no clue as to whether or not either face goes on that neck or body, but that's two faces. And again, the face is colored differently than the neck, not to mention the big, round discoloration right above his cheek bone that seems to follow an odd pattern for a random skin blotch. Oh, but that's right. That's because it's not.

Again, I don't know if Kim Jong IL is actually ill or if he's actually dead. But I do know that everyone in a picture should not be missing all of their fingers (unless it's some sort of documentary which follows the fingerless), faces should not look like they're Halloween masks (I'm surprised they didn't have Nixon standing there as well!), and if you're watching a soccer match, you should see soccer players and not trees on the field! And if he has croaked, just remember, I was the first one to say "Liar, liar, pants on fire." Or something equally as poetic.

Admiral Ackbar, I Presume?

Well, this is either quite exciting or quite confusing. I don't know which one yet because I'm still not sure what I'm seeing. Once I figure that out, I'll know how I feel about it.

Yesterday, allegedly Kim Jong Il (that's pronounced 'ill'. I realize it looks like "Kim Jong, the second", but it's not.), the Grand Poobah of North Korea, made a public appearance and watched a soccer game. While that doesn't sound like that big of a deal, you have to consider that a) he hasn't been seen in public since mid-August, b) he is rumored to have had a stroke and been fairly incapacitated, and c) underwent brain surgery on September 10 (correct, less than a month ago). Also factor in that the North Koreans are a secretive and weaselly bunch. Big fans of the propaganda, the North Koreans. Big fans. Also big fans of lying their asses off.

So, the bouffant-ed one went to a soccer match and it was the first time he's been seen in almost two months. Do you think that there are any pictures of this grand event? Of course not. None that I've seen. Yeah, I'm not buying it. Was he watching the soccer game from the sidelines with a leprechaun on his knee while his unicorn grazed nearby? Why wouldn't they release pictures of something like that? (Haven't found just the right Photoshop guy yet, North Korea?)

So, as I'm looking for pictures of this crazy-leader-watches-game-where-you-can't-use-your-hands event, I run across this picture:

And the caption reads"A South Korean woman watches TV reporting on North Korean leader Kim Jong Il at a railway station in Seoul, South Korea, Sunday, Oct. 5, 2008." Um, wait. A South Korean WOMAN? WTF?!

THAT is a woman watching that TV? There is no way. You know who that is, don't you? I swear to you, it's this guy from the back:

Seriously, what is with that "woman's" "head"?? That is a direct descendant of Admiral Ackbar if I have ever seen one. Either that or the nuclear stuff that they're working on in North Korea isn't going so well.
